Republican Governors Thank Trump For Putting Critical Programs on the Chopping Block

Today, Republican governors publicly thanked Donald Trump and Senate Republicans for pushing disastrous tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy while putting vital programs like Medicare and Medicaid on the chopping block. Yes, they literally thanked him.

“Every Republican governor and candidate will have to answer to the people in their states about why they support Trump and Republicans’ plans that would gut essential programs to further line the pockets of billionaires,” said DGA Communications Director Sam Newton. “While Democratic governors are laser-focused on helping working families and putting their states first, Republican governors care more about their own extreme partisan politics – and we look forward to holding them accountable in 2026.”

Here’s what Republican governors are thankful that Trump and Republicans repeatedly fought for:

  • Slashing Medicaid and Medicare to fund tax cuts for billionaires;

  • Raising out-of-pocket costs for Medicare recipients;

  • Letting rural hospitals close due to Medicaid funding cuts;

  • Gutting SNAP funding, putting food security at risk for millions of Americans;

  • Continuing DOGE’s cuts to Social Security, including the closure of field offices;

  • Blocking tax relief for middle-class families and small businesses;

  • Cutting access to child care through Head Start preschools; and more.
