New Reporting Exposes the Trump Loyalists, Far Right Republicans Funding Mike Duggan’s Campaign
New reporting from the Detroit Metro Times exposes the vast network of far right Republicans, MAGA loyalists, and “conservative power brokers” funding Mike Duggan’s campaign, including “a billionaire megadonor to Trump, a charter school profiteer, former leaders of the Michigan Republican Party, and an aide to former Gov. Rick Snyder who was charged for his role in the Flint water crisis.”
Among others, the Detroit Metro Times pointed to “Ron Weiser, the former chair of the Michigan Republican Party and a major Trump fundraiser, also gave Duggan the maximum donation,” along with, “Jeff Sakwa, a former state party co-chair and close ally of Ronna Romney McDaniel, who ran the Republican National Committee and was a zealous Trump supporter.”
Duggan’s far right support is even raising alarms among Republicans, including Michigan Republican Party official Chris Long, who worried that Duggan’s Republican donors are “growing fractures within the state GOP,” accusing Duggan’s donors of asking themselves “What’s going to make them profit? What’s going to give them access?”
This comes as Mike Duggan has cozied up to Elon Musk and refused to oppose Trump’s budget bill that slashes Medicaid and SNAP for hundreds of thousands of Michiganders.
“If you’re curious who wants to see Mike Duggan as governor, just follow the money to the numerous Trump loyalists and ultra-wealthy Republicans who are shelling out thousands to his campaign,” said DGA Communications Director Sam Newton. “Michigan families cannot trust Duggan to stand up for them.”
