NEW POLL: MS-GOV Tied As Brandon Presley Maintains Momentum, Reeves Remains Deeply Unpopular
Presley at 45% vs. Reeves at 46% in a head-to-head matchup
A new survey of Mississippi voters conducted by Public Policy Polling shows Mississippi’s governor’s race in a dead heat, with Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley gaining momentum and statistically tied with Governor Tate Reeves 45%-46% in a head-to-head matchup.
The poll also finds that Tate Reeves is deeply unpopular with a net negative 18% favorability rating (33% favorable vs. 51% unfavorable) and an abysmal net negative 11% job approval (36% approval vs. 47% disapprove). Reeves’ numbers are even worse with Independent voters, who make up a large portion of undecided voters, including a net negative 44% favorability rating (19% favorable vs. 63% unfavorable) and a net negative 35% job approval (22% approve vs. 57% disapprove).
Making Reeves’ problems worse, 66% of all voters are very concerned (51%) or somewhat concerned (15%) about the role Reeves may have played in the state’s far-reaching welfare scandal, with 70% of Independents and 49% of Republicans concerned. Only 12% of voters say they are not concerned at all.
In contrast, Brandon Presley has a net positive favorability rating and room to grow. This comes after Brandon has spent months campaigning in all 82 of Mississippi’s counties, sharing his plans to expand Medicaid, cut taxes for working people, and wage war on corruption, while holding Gov. Reeves accountable for his corruption and the state’s hospital closure crisis.
Since Labor Day, Reeves has been exposed for abusing taxpayer dollars by taking numerous personal and political trips on the state plane, conducting luxurious renovations on the governor’s mansion, and doling out massive state contracts for a family business, all while previously unreleased text messages show executives from the drug company at the center of the welfare scandal planning to donate campaign contributions to Reeves in order to keep receiving state funds.
“Mississippi voters are fed up with Gov. Tate Reeves, his long record of corruption, and his refusal to expand Medicaid,” said DGA Deputy Communications Director Izzi Levy. “On the other hand, Brandon Presley is running a strong campaign for all Mississippians, promising to root out the culture of corruption that Reeves has brought to the state government, and end the state’s hospital closure crisis by expanding Medicaid. Brandon has what it takes to win this race, and Reeves clearly has what it takes to lose it.”
