New Poll: Kelly Ayotte More Extreme than NH Republicans on Restricting Abortion

A new poll conducted by the UMass Lowell Center for Public Opinion and YouGov shows that support for reproductive rights remains extremely high in New Hampshire, including amongst Republican voters. According to the poll, “more than half of Granite State Republicans surveyed (66%), believe there should be a right to get an abortion in every state in the United States.”

By contrast, former U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte led the charge for a national abortion ban — which would by definition have eliminated this right — while also calling for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, voting against funding for Planned Parenthood, and voting to make it harder for Granite Staters to access birth control. After losing her reelection bid in 2016, Ayotte went on to serve as the “sherpa” for Neil Gorsuch’s Supreme Court nomination process, paving the way for the overturning of Roe. Ayotte also supports the state’s current ban on abortion and has said she would not reverse it if she becomes governor.

Earlier this week, Fox News reported that Ayotte will be traveling to Virginia next month to campaign with Gov. Glenn Youngkin, a fellow anti-abortion extremist who just recently vetoed a bill to protect access to contraception.

“Kelly Ayotte’s dangerous record on abortion – including leading the charge to ban abortion nationwide – puts her in territory even more extreme than a majority of her own party,” said DGA States Press Secretary Emma O’Brien. “Reproductive rights are on the ballot, and Kelly Ayotte has proven she’s far too extreme to be New Hampshire’s next governor. Granite Staters won’t let her take away their fundamental rights.”
