Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo Applauds Trump’s Attacks on Public Schools

After Donald Trump signed an executive order gutting the Department of Education, Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo was quick to celebrate this dangerous order in an op-ed first published in the far-right outlet Breitbart, then the Reno Gazette Journal.

In the op-ed, Lombardo praises Trump’s proposal to defund public schools, slash resources for students with disabilities and from rural communities, and threaten the jobs of thousands of teachers and school support staff, while also pushing for a costly expansion of the state’s voucher program that would further strip resources from public schools to funnel into unaccountable private and charter schools.

None of this comes as a surprise, after Lombardo has made attacks on public schools a key pillar of his administration. In 2023, Lombardo vetoed a bill that would have provided $43 million for universal school meals for public school students across the state, which led to some families racking up more than $60,000 in debt, and one school district draining its savings to help families feed their kids.

“Gov. Joe Lombardo has proven that he has no interest in protecting Nevada’s public schools, or supporting the state’s students, parents, and teachers, and his embrace of Donald Trump’s dangerous executive order only further solidifies that,” said DGA National Press Secretary Devon Cruz. “Nevadans deserve a governor who is committed to making sure every student can get a quality education, cutting costs for parents and working families, and protecting the jobs of teachers and school support staff — not someone who puts public schools on the chopping block every chance he gets.”
