Mitch McConnell Sends Cameron Campaign a New Babysitter
After a slow start as the new Republican nominee for governor, it’s clear Mitch McConnell hasn’t been impressed with his #1 crony Daniel Cameron’s campaign after it was revealed that McConnell’s long-time chief of staff is taking a leave of absence to run Cameron’s campaign – amid conflicting reports about who is in charge.
This campaign shakeup comes as Cameron has failed to come up with any answers or explanations for why he covered for Matt Bevin’s pardon scandal. Upon taking office, Cameron promised that as attorney general, he would “look at” Bevin’s pardons of dozens of violent criminals, including for a man who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting and nearly killing a 15-year-old boy and a convicted felon whose brother contributed to Bevin’s campaign. Three and a half years later, Cameron has failed to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate this corruption.
This is also the most recent example of Cameron’s diehard allegiance to McConnell. During his campaign for attorney general, Cameron said he couldn’t remember a single time where he disagreed with the Senator in private or in public, claiming “we’re pretty aligned on most things in terms of our conservative views. I don’t have anything I’ve probably disagreed with him on.” Referring to McConnell, Cameron said, “when I first met him, I knew he was somebody I wanted to emulate.”
“With Mitch McConnell apparently running his campaign, should Kentuckians direct their questions about why Daniel Cameron covered for Matt Bevin’s corrupt pardons and why he has refused to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate this scandal in over three and a half years to the Senator’s office?” said Democratic Governors Association States Press Secretary Emma O’Brien. “Kentuckians deserve answers, and Cameron can’t hide behind McConnell forever.”
