Mikie Sherrill Vows to Freeze Utility Rates on Day One

Yesterday, Mikie Sherrill announced that she will declare a State of Emergency on Utility Costs on day one as governor to freeze New Jerseyans’ utility rates and lower costs for families. With a focus on expanding investments in new, cheaper, and cleaner power generation and increasing transparency and accountability from New Jersey utility companies, Sherrill is relentlessly focused on bringing down costs for hardworking families, while also charting a brighter path forward for the state.

Meanwhile, Jack Ciattarelli fully supports Trump’s deeply unpopular budget bill that jacks up everyday costs, kills good-paying jobs, and raises New Jersey families’ utility costs by over $200 per year.

Sherrill’s plan also emphasizes building more solar and battery storage projects, upgrading nuclear plants and making natural gas facilities “cleaner and more efficient.” Echoing her plan from last week about easing the permitting process for new projects, she said she wants to speed up the construction of solar development to account for recent Trump administration legislation that requires construction on solar and wind projects to begin by July 2026 to receive federal tax credit.

Sherrill, the Democratic nominee to succeed term-limited Gov. Phil Murphy, said she would declare a state of emergency on the first day of her governorship and freeze utility rates, an action she says no governor has ever taken. She paired that declaration with a promise to build an “energy arsenal” of cheap, clean power sources in the state that will lower prices in the long run.

“It’s extremely important that Mikie declares a state of emergency on utility costs. She’ll eliminate unnecessary red tape and permitting delays, so new, cheaper, cleaner energy can be built. This new arsenal in our state will bring down bills and help working families make ends meet. More power generation means more good-paying union jobs and more families with a pathway to a middle class,” said Keith Misciagna from IBEW Local 164.

Sherrill said it would deliver immediate relief to New Jersey families – while also creating a long-range plan and strategy to drive down costs, increase production and decrease carbon emissions. “And I’m not afraid to take on anyone – whether it’s the utility companies, our grid operator, or my own party – to get it done,” said Sherrill.

Sherrill said the average New Jersey family would not see an increase in utility rates for one year under her plan. She also pledged to “massively increase” in-state power generation to bring down the cost of energy, including by supporting new solar and battery storage projects, expediting upgrades at existing nuclear plants, modernizing natural gas plants, and more.
