Sherman’s launch reignites Reynolds’ Trump troubles
On Monday, former Iowa state Representative Brad Sherman launched his campaign for governor, pulling no punches at Governor Kim Reynolds.
In his launch, Sherman channeled Donald Trump with his promise to drain the “bureaucratic swamp” he claims Des Moines has turned into under Reynolds tenure, and swiped at her loyalty to Trump, noting he “endorsed [Trump] early and supported in rallies, caucuses, conventions, and elections,” unlike Reynolds who refused to endorse Trump and instead backed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the primary — which led to a simmering and wide-reaching feud that has continued to cause her political problems.
The Register reports that Sherman “is expected to run to the political right of Reynolds,” whose time as governor has already been defined by an extreme and uncompromising record of defunding public education, banning books and threatening teachers, and signing one of the most extreme abortion bans in the country.
“Brad Sherman entering Iowa’s governor’s race is the first of many headaches for Governor Kim Reynolds’ reelection bid that hasn’t even started yet,” said DGA Campaign Communications Advisor Emma O’Brien. “While she’s forced to fight off attacks from members of her own party and competes in Trump loyalty tests and ring-kissing, Iowa voters can expect their concerns to fall low on Governor Reynolds’ priority list. One thing we can agree with Brad Sherman about: Iowans deserve better than another four years of Kim Reynolds.”
