John James Caught Using Taxpayer-Funded Resources to Promote Campaign
Earlier this week, Michigan GOP gubernatorial candidate John James used taxpayer-funded federal government resources to promote his own campaign, according to new reporting from MIRS News in Michigan.
MIRS detailed that James “could face some issues for promoting a backpack giveaway at a Macomb County baseball stadium on Wednesday through his congressional office. At the event, signs promoting James’s gubernatorial campaign were posted around the tables supporting the soon-to-be given away backpacks.”
The U.S. House Ethics Committee specifically says that the use of Congressional office computers, telephones and staff – all resources paid for by federal tax dollars – “generally may not be used for campaign or political purposes.”
Michigan attorney Mark Brewer put it bluntly: “[James] was illegally and unethically using federal government resources for campaign purposes in support of his run for governor of Michigan. It’s as simple as that.”
“John James just voted to rip health care and food assistance away from working families, but has now been caught using taxpayer funds to promote his own campaign. James owes Michiganders answers,” said DGA Communications Director Sam Newton.
