Jennifer McCormick Outlines “Commonsense Abortion Rights Plan” to Combat Extreme Abortion Restrictions in Indiana
On Thursday, Indiana’s Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jennifer McCormick outlined the ways that she would stand up for the reproductive freedom of Hoosiers if elected governor.
In 2022, Indiana Republicans passed one of the strictest abortion bans in the country, banning abortion at any time during pregnancy, with only narrow exceptions up to 10 weeks. Polling from earlier this year found that 64% of Hoosiers believe that abortion should be legal in all or most cases.
While campaigning for governor, McCormick has been hammering Braun for his support of Indiana’s extreme ban in television ads, on the debate stage, and across the state after Braun declared that Republicans did a “good job” passing such an extreme ban, and argues that it’s “working for Hoosiers.”
Read More About Jennifer McCormick’s “Commonsense Abortion Rights Plan”:
- Indiana Capital Chronicle: “‘I’ve traveled 92 counties, listened to a lot of Hoosiers, and by far one of the biggest issues that we’re hearing about is reproductive rights and freedoms,’ McCormick said in a virtual press conference. ‘I’ve made it clear … that I trust women; I trust our health care providers. And when you do that, you allow them the autonomy to make decisions that they need to make.’”
- FOX 59: “On Thursday, McCormick’s campaign released its plan surrounding Indiana’s near-total abortion ban. However, this is not McCormick’s first time she has spoken about the law. During FOX59/CBS4’s recent gubernatorial debate, McCormick voiced her support for overturning the state’s near-total abortion ban. McCormick said at that time that her campaign would look at every step available to overturn the law while working with the Indiana General Assembly.”
- WIBC: “McCormick, a former Republican, has stood firm in the belief that one of the goals that must be accomplished under her potential governor administration is the restoration of reproductive rights in Indiana…The McCormick campaign also specified that part of its reproductive rights agenda would be to create a ‘citizen-led’ ballot choice, which would, in theory, allow you to vote against Indiana’s near-total abortion ban directly. Currently, the ban only leaves room for a woman to pursue an abortion if she were raped, the victim of incest, or if her or the baby’s life were in danger.”
- Lakeshore Public Media: “Reproductive rights have been a centerpiece of Democrat Jennifer McCormick’s gubernatorial campaign from the beginning. Proposals McCormick unveiled Thursday flesh out how she would confront Indiana’s near-total abortion ban in the governor’s office. McCormick has long said she’d use the platform of the governor’s office to advocate for changes to the state’s abortion ban. But short of that, she said she would appoint people to state boards and commissions that are, in her words, ‘more supportive of women and health care providers.’”
