GOP Candidates for Governor Must Answer for Trump’s Jan 6th Pardons
Today, Democratic Governors Association National Press Secretary Devon Cruz released the following statement after President Donald Trump pardoned, commuted the prison sentences, or vowed to dismiss the cases of over 1,500 people charged with or convicted of crimes related to the January 6th riots, including those who violently attacked police officers:
“Instead of taking action to address the biggest issues facing working families in America, Donald Trump began his second term by undermining public safety and law enforcement, letting over 1,500 rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol off the hook for their crimes. As Republican candidates for governor in New Jersey and Virginia face pressure to prove their loyalty to MAGA extremism above all else in order to win their nominations, they need to answer whether or not they support freeing people convicted of assaulting law enforcement and other serious crimes.”Polling has found that pardoning these criminals is deeply unpopular across party lines.
