Georgia GOP’s Attempt to Defuse “Vicious” Gov Primary Blows Up in Their Face
The Georgia Republican Party was set to vote this week on a party resolution that would serve as a “truce” aimed at calming tensions amidst the “vicious” Republican gubernatorial primary.
Yet the effort at “comity” quickly resulted in … even more infighting.
The measure was meant to be an olive branch aimed at reversing a party resolution passed earlier this year that denounced GOP gubernatorial candidate Brad Raffensperger as “repugnant.” But the new (and relatively bland) “comity” resolution caused massive backlash from the far-right, with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporting that Georgia Republican Assembly Chair Alex Johnson called the measure “‘Nazi-like restrictions on speech’ to protect the establishment.” Oof!
Instead of holding a vote, the Georgia Republican Party has punted the measure, delaying it for another thirty days. They can’t even agree to be “united”!
The resolution’s failure is just the latest sign that Georgia Republicans are descending into a chaotic, messy Republican primary defined by personal and vicious attacks between the candidates. Last week, Chris Carr and his campaign repeatedly accused Burt Jones of running to make himself richer — an attack that Carr said was earning him “amens” and “applause.” Jones has repeatedly gone after both of his opponents for lacking MAGA credentials.
“The Georgia Republican Party seems determined to do everything it can to ensure a vicious Republican gubernatorial primary – and elect a Democratic governor. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!” said DGA spokesperson Kevin Donohoe.
