DGA Statement on Trump Dismantling the Department of Education

Democratic Governors Association Communications Director Sam Newton released the following statement in response to President Donald Trump’s executive order to dismantle the Department of Education:

“Donald Trump’s executive order gutting the Department of Education is an attack on local public schools and will directly hurt students, parents, and teachers. This will mean larger class sizes, make it harder for students to find jobs, and deprive kids with disabilities and rural communities of the resources they need – all while threatening the jobs of teachers and school support staff who are already too often overworked and underpaid.

“Republican governors have led a decades-long crusade against public education and today, many of them joined Donald Trump as he takes an unprecedented step to undermine local schools. While Democratic governors will always defend teachers, students, and schools, every Republican governor and candidate for governor will now be forced to own Trump’s efforts to dismantle our public schools – and have to answer to the parents and kids in their states that they failed.”
