DGA Statement on Governor Peter Shumlin’s Decision Not to Seek Re-election
WASHINGTON, DC — DGA Executive Director Elisabeth Pearson issued the following statement after Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin announced he would not seek reelection in 2016. Shumlin has served as governor since 2011:
“Governor Peter Shumlin has been a key leader at a critical time for the state of Vermont. Under Governor Shumlin’s leadership, Vermont has added 16,800 jobs and decreased its unemployment rate to 3.6% — the fourth lowest in the nation. Governor Shumlin has increased investment in renewable energy, deployed broadband internet to communities across Vermont, and passed same-day voter registration to make it easier for Vermonters to vote.
“Governor Shumlin was also a great leader for Democratic governors, leading the DGA to key wins in states like Virginia and Pennsylvania. The DGA thanks Governor Shumlin for his service to the people of Vermont and to Democratic governors. With a deep Democratic bench in a presidential year, Vermont is poised to elect another Democratic governor to continue to build upon this economic progress.”
