DGA Statement on Gov. Cooper’s Veto of North Carolina’s Extreme Abortion Ban

Democratic Governors Association Executive Director Meghan Meehan-Draper released the following statement, applauding Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of the extreme abortion ban that North Carolina Republicans jammed through the legislature earlier this month:

“Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto today is yet more proof that Democratic governors remain the last and best line of defense for reproductive freedom, and it brings with it a warning of what’s at stake in North Carolina’s gubernatorial election next fall. While Gov. Cooper has consistently worked to uphold women’s most fundamental rights, the Republicans running to replace him would be only too happy to sign this extreme and dangerous abortion ban into law — with candidates like Mark Robinson pushing to go even further by outlawing exceptions for victims of rape and incest. DGA remains committed to ensuring that North Carolina’s next governor continues to defend reproductive freedom.”

All of the Republicans running for Governor in North Carolina are outspoken opponents of reproductive freedom — including Lt. Governor Mark Robinson, who if elected governor would “pass a bill saying you can’t have an abortion in North Carolina for any reason,” and former congressman Mark Walker, widely expected to launch a campaign next week, who believes that “governments shouldn’t allow abortions under any circumstances.”

This comes as America Works USA, a separate 501(c)(4) organization allied with the Democratic Governors Association, partnered with Planned Parenthood Votes! South Atlantic to help fund a six-figure ad buy to build legislative support to sustain Gov. Cooper’s veto of this dangerous bill. Watch HERE.
