DGA Statement on Donald Trump Endorsing Mark Robinson

DGA Communications Director Sam Newton released the following statement in response to Donald Trump’s endorsement of Mark Robinson:

“The former President who brags about eliminating Roe v. Wade is backing the extremist running for governor so he can ban abortion with no exceptions. The stakes in North Carolina in 2024 could not be higher.”

Specifically, Mark Robinson is a dangerous, anti-abortion extremist who has said if he were governor he’d pass legislation to make sure women “can’t get an abortion in North Carolina for any reason,” while comparing abortion to “murder” and “genocide” and telling women, “Once you make a baby, it’s not your body anymore—it’s y’all’s body.”

Robinson has recently reaffirmed multiple times that banning abortion is a top priority, saying, “We got it down to 12 weeks. The next goal is to get it down to six, and then just keep moving from there,” along with “We rolled it back from 20 weeks to 12 weeks. That’s where it’s sitting right now. Sure would we like to see it go on back? Absolutely we want to see it go on back. We want to continue to fight the road on that…We have to continue to fight.”

Last month, the DGA released polling that found 51% of voters in North Carolina oppose the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, with only 36% supporting it. Additionally, 52% of voters said they would “prefer a governor who supports protecting abortion rights” vs. only 35% who “prefer a governor who wants to restrict abortion rights.”

Notably, only 9% said abortion should be illegal in all cases, which is of course Robinson’s position.
