DGA Statement on Arizona Supreme Court Abortion Decision

Today, Democratic Governors Association Executive Director Meghan Meehan-Draper released the following statement on the Arizona Supreme Court’s decision to allow an 1864 near-total abortion ban to be enforceable:

“The ruling from Arizona’s Supreme Court, made up entirely of judges appointed by Republican governors, further threatens the Arizona women who are already facing extreme restrictions and ongoing attacks on their reproductive freedom. We are proud to stand with Governor Katie Hobbs in her fight to restore abortion access in Arizona and against these dangerous efforts to rip away reproductive rights.

“Today’s decision also reaffirms the importance of state judiciaries and the power that nearly every governor in the country has to appoint the judges who are ruling on the future of reproductive rights. Just as Trump-appointed Supreme Court Justices overturned Roe v. Wade, Republican-appointed State Supreme Court justices made this devastating ruling. That is exactly why the DGA launched our Power to Appoint fund, which will help elect more Democratic governors like Katie Hobbs with the power to appoint judges who stand for the rule of law and uphold the constitution.

“This fight is not over, and we look forward to supporting Gov. Hobbs as she fights to restore abortion rights in Arizona, while electing Democratic governors across the country who will do the same in their states.”

More on Gov. Hobbs’ Fight to Protect Reproductive Freedom:

In addition to calling for the legislature to repeal the 1864 ban today, Gov. Katie Hobbs has been fighting to protect reproductive freedom throughout her time in office, including signing an executive order that protects women and doctors from abortion prosecution, expanding access to over-the-counter contraceptives, and vetoing GOP-led legislation that would restrict access to abortion and IVF.

More on the DGA’s Power to Appoint Initiative:

The Power to Appoint is a new dedicated, no-overhead fund with a mission to uplift an important power almost every governor in America has – appointing judges. The Power to Appoint will be a critical tool to raise the awareness and resources needed to win in states where the governor has the power to appoint judges, which is true for all 11 states with a governor’s race this year, including North Carolina and New Hampshire.
