DGA Chair Laura Kelly Statement on Senate Republicans’ Passage of Their Extreme Budget Bill
In response to Senate Republicans’ passage of an extreme budget that cuts Medicaid and SNAP food benefits while exploding the national deficit, Democratic Governors Association Chair Kansas Governor Laura Kelly released the following statement:
“Today, Senate Republicans voted to pass a disastrous budget that will wreak havoc on working families and rip health care away from millions of Americans – all while exploding the national deficit by nearly 3.3 trillion dollars over the next ten years. This bill would also kill countless jobs and put our families, farmers, and small businesses who depend on SNAP at risk of not being able to put food on the table or closing their doors.
“While Washington Republicans continue to talk about ‘cost shifts,’ Democratic governors have been clear that it will be impossible for states to respond to such massive cuts by backfilling with state resources. This isn’t about blue states and red states, this is about common sense. We cannot gut health care or let children go hungry in the name of giving tax breaks to the wealthy. I urge members of the House to reject this harmful bill.”
