DGA Chair Gov. Laura Kelly Discusses “What a Difference” Democratic Governors Make For Their States

In one of her first sit-downs as Chair of the Democratic Governors Association, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly spoke with National Journal, outlining the “growing appreciation” for “how important governors are and what a difference [they] make in [their] states.”

Whether it’s the new class of governors elected in 2022 or the second-term governors who were elected in 2018, they have “all had a great opportunity to very overtly demonstrate [their] leadership skills,” as Gov. Kelly told National Journal.

She also discussed this year’s top governor’s race, which is her “highest priority” as chair –  including in key states like North Carolina. Gov. Kelly said: “Josh Stein is a superior candidate. He’s got his attorney-general experience; he’s worked alongside Roy Cooper; he’s got all the right things for North Carolinians in mind.”

Additional Key Quotes Include:

  • Discussing taking on this new role, Gov. Kelly said she’s excited “because it gives me an opportunity to give back. The DGA has been so incredibly helpful, and it really is fun to work with a gubernatorial candidate and help them get through.”
