As SCOTUS Hears Mifepristone Case, Dem Govs Lead the Fight to Protect Abortion Medication in Their States
Yesterday, as the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in FDA v. Alliance For Hippocratic Medicine, the nation’s Democratic governors led the way by reaffirming their commitment to protecting access to medication abortion in their states and detailing the steps they’ve already taken.
Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022, Democratic governors across the country have continued to hold the line and take real actions to protect women reproductive freedoms such as stockpiling abortion medication, repealed harmful bans, and passed legislation to protect patients and providers. - Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and Gov. Roy Cooper: “We’re who Justice Alito said should make abortion law. Leave mifepristone alone.”
- Gov. Gretchen Whitmer: “This fight is far from over. We know that there are going to be continued efforts to make it more and more difficult for women to access reproductive healthcare.”
- Gov. Katie Hobbs: “I will always defend access to reproductive care for Arizona women. I am proud to join the effort to protect access to Mifepristone, and will continue to stand strong against out-of-state extremists attacking our basic rights.”
- Gov. Tina Kotek: “Today, the Supreme Court is hearing arguments in a case that would once again threaten Oregonians’ access to reproductive health care. I join my fellow Governors in the Reproductive Freedom Alliance and urge the Supreme Court to side with medical experts and decades of science.”
- Gov. Phil Murphy: “As SCOTUS considers more restrictions on abortion access, @FirstLadyNJ & I visited Absecon’s brand new @ppncsnj health center to thank providers for their commitment to reproductive care. NJ will continue working to remain a safe haven for women & reproductive freedom. Period.”
- Gov. Gavin Newsom: “Today, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in a case that threatens to block medication abortion access & impose a backdoor abortion ban. Trying to strip away FDA approval for a drug that has been proven to be safe & effective is just another play to control women’s bodies.”
- Gov. JB Pritzker: “Their decisions will echo through history. Regardless of the outcome, as the Governor of Illinois, I will continue standing strong in defending access to safe, legal abortion.”
- Gov. Josh Shapiro: “Health care decisions should be made by women and their doctors — not extremist politicians. Mifepristone is available in Pennsylvania pharmacies — and I’ll always continue to protect your access to abortion and defend your freedom to choose.”
