As GOP Governors Ramp Up Attacks, Dem Govs Remain Committed to Protecting Reproductive Rights
Last week, Republican governors across the country continued their attacks against Americans’ reproductive rights: Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin vetoed a bill protecting contraception access in the dead of night, solidifying “his record as a hard-right Republican,” according to the Washington Post. On Friday, Gov. Jeff Landry signed a controversial bill that classifies safe, commonly prescribed abortion medications, mifepristone and misoprostol, as “controlled substances,” “making possession of the pills without a prescription a crime.”
Meanwhile, as ABC noted, Democratic governors are going on “offense as the GOP opens the door to birth control restrictions.”
In a recent interview with The 19th, the DGA slammed Youngkin for his veto, saying it “‘goes to show that Republicans were never going to stop at Dobbs. When Glenn Youngkin had the chance to protect reproductive rights, he put this veto forward…there’s a clear contrast here’ between the two parties.”
Here’s just some of what Democratic governors have done to protect reproductive freedom in their states:
- Govs. Healey, Hochul, Kotek, Inslee and Newsom were among those who established stockpiles of abortion medications to ensure their citizens can access the care they need.
-
Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs signed a bill into law officially repealing the state’s 1864 abortion ban.
-
Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, have all taken action or signed laws to protect and expand access to birth control in their states.
-
DGA Chair and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul have all signed legislation to codify abortion rights into state law.
-
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, Delaware Gov. John Carney, Hawaii Gov. Josh Green, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan-Grisham, and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee took action protecting abortion providers from criminal prosecution and out-of-state legal attacks.
-
Maine Gov. Janet Mills, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee, and Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs issued executive orders protecting reproductive freedoms, patients, and providers, and prevented other states from taking action against women seeking reproductive health care in their states.
