Additional No Confidence Votes Destabilize WVGOP, Threaten Justice Re-election

More County Parties Considering No Confidence Votes This Week

It looks like the Kanawha County GOP’s vote of no-confidence for West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice was just the beginning.

Today, News and Sentinel reported that two more Republican executive committees are meeting to potentially pass similar resolutions expressing their distaste for the leader of their party. Additional reports suggest that the votes are part of a larger “behind-the-scenes movement of Republican activists” to weaken the governor and other party leaders.

One thing is clear: Justice is vulnerable. The governor is likely facing a strong primary challenge from his former Secretary of Commerce, Woody Thrasher. The economy remains sluggish. Now, grassroots GOP activists are calling out for a change. They just might get it.

“If Jim Justice keeps hemorrhaging support from his own party, his re-election effort might be doomed before it even starts,” said DGA Communications Director David Turner. “Republicans are headed towards a very messy primary, and it’s already tearing the state party apart.”
