Statement from DGA Chair Gov. Phil Murphy Calling On the Federal Government to Fully Fund USPS

Latest News

The Trump administration and Republicans in Congress are attempting to impede the functions of the United States Postal Service in order to suppress the vote in November.

DGA Chair New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy today issued the following statement in support of fully funding the United States Postal Service:

“Every single American relies on the United States Postal Service every single day. Any threat to the United States Postal Service is a threat to veterans who depend on it for medication. It is a threat to seniors who depend on it for Social Security. It is a threat to rural communities, for which it is an economic lifeline. It is a threat to small businesses, the lifeblood of our economy, which are already reeling from the pandemic and depend on the USPS for affordable shipping and business services. This assault on one of our nation’s most cherished and vital institutions must end. Period. Full stop.

“The importance of the Post Office has been greatly amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in the area of securing our sacred right to vote and to do so safely. The expansion of voting by mail will literally save lives and help to ensure that the constitutional right of every citizen to cast their ballot this November will not be infringed upon. It is unconscionable that the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress would choose to play political games with a service that we need now more than ever.

“I am calling on the federal government to fund the United States Postal Service. The American people demand that you act immediately to solve this problem that you have created.”
