Stapleton Cozies Up With Known Trump Sycophant and White Nationalist Sympathizer

While most Coloradans were enjoying the holiday weekend, indulging in barbecues and sunshine, GOP gubernatorial nominee Walker Stapleton was getting real cozy with his fringe, far-right allies.
Stapleton was at a fundraiser on Saturday with known bigot Tom Tancredo. Tancredo has spent his recent yearsdefending white nationalist organizations and supporting fringe anti-immigrant views.
Despite Tancredo himself acknowledging that his brand may be a liability for him, Stapleton had no qualms joining Tancredo and glad-handing Tancredo and his ilk.
Last night, Meet the Press host Chuck Todd explained Stapleton’s footsie with Tancredo’s white nationalist followers as a desperate plea to Trump voters:
KYLE CLARK: Chuck Todd, moderator of NBC’s Meet the Press, told us today that Colorado’s Republican candidate for governor, Walker Stapleton, might just be holding onto his alliance with Tom Tancredo despite Tancredo’s defense of white nationalists in order to send a message.
CHUCK TODD: Maybe Walker Stapleton isn’t comfortable saying what needs to be said and he wants sort of, wants an association that will send that message to the Trump base. There seems to be less of that Trump base in Colorado than other swing states.
“Maybe Walker Stapleton isn’t comfortable saying what needs to be said, and sort of wants an association.”
“When Walker Stapleton has no issue campaigning with a well known bigot like Tom Tancredo, it says something about his character,” said Democratic Governors Association Deputy Communications Director David Turner. “Stapleton didn’t have to run to the right during the primary because he was already there. Colorado deserves a governor that won’t cater to white nationalist sympathizers to win votes, and it deserves better than Stapleton.”

There seems to be less of that Trump base in Colorado than other swing states. It is a different — there is a larger portion of what i would call the John Kasich wing of the Republican party that still exists. The Cory Gardner wing of the Republican party that is more allergic to the Trump wing.
