Mitch McConnell Has Already Congratulated Biden on Presidential Win, But New Jersey GOP Candidates Still Refuse to Acknowledge Election Results

Latest News

It’s now been 41 days since the presidential election was called for Joe Biden, nine days since all 50 states officially certified their election results, and three days since the Electoral College voted to make Biden’s win official. Top GOP officials, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, have finally congratulated Biden on his victory.

But New Jersey gubernatorial candidates haven’t accepted the results of our democratic election – Jack Ciattarelli, Doug Steinhardt, and Hirsh Singh still refuse to acknowledge President-elect Biden’s win. The three are in a race to the right, trying to earn the praise of failed candidate Donald Trump, who insists the election was “rigged,” despite no reports of widespread voter fraud.

Each candidate is trying to prove their loyalty to Trump by embracing his unhinged conspiracy theories – Ciattarelli even went so far as to headline a “Stop the Steal” rally. Ciattarelli, Steinhardt, and other New Jersey Republicans’ failure to accept the results of a democratic election and acknowledge reality is dangerous, and could inflict lasting harm on our democracy.

A writer from the Star-Ledger Editorial Board suggested Ciattarelli and New Jersey Republicans’ refusal to publicly acknowledge the results of the election is just a dance to win over Trump’s base, saying, “it’s about their careers, not their country.”

“The fact that Mitch McConnell has acknowledged the election results and these three knuckleheads haven’t shows just how far removed from reality Ciattarelli, Steinhardt, and Singh are,” said DGA Deputy Communications Director Christina Amestoy. “With absolutely no proof of voter fraud, Ciattarelli is headlining Stop the Steal rallies and attempting to discredit the results of a democratic election. This little dance the GOP candidates are doing for Donald Trump is truly pathetic – and New Jerseyans will see right through it.”
