In Charlottesville This Morning, Gillespie Ducks On Trump Again

Latest News

He did it again.
This morning, Virginia Republican Ed Gillespie got another chance to call out President Trump for his divisive rhetoric surrounding the white nationalist protests in Charlottesville.
And once again, he declined.

It’s been more than a week since Trump’s first press conference in which he spread the blame to “all sides,” and Gillespie has gone to great lengths to avoid mentioning the president. This weekend, Gillespie didn’t mention the president at all during a speech to the Americans for Prosperity summit and even refused to do interviews so he wouldn’t have to answer difficult questions on Trump:
Gillespie was not available to speak with a reporter after his speech, said campaign manager Chris Leavitt.
The longtime GOP consultant and strategist faces Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, the Democratic nominee for governor, in a race viewed by many national pundits as a referendum on Trump. Trump’s comments following the Charlottesville violence blaming “many sides” upset political leaders in both parties.
Gillespie did not mention Trump during his speech.
“The cowardly campaign continues for Ed Gillespie,” said DGA Communications Director Jared Leopold. “Gillespie has failed over and over again to call out Donald Trump, and that puts Virginians at risk. If Gillespie can’t stand up to Trump during the campaign, how will he be able to do so as governor?”
