Rauner Brings Back IPI Cartoon Strategy in Senger Email Defense

With Bruce Rauner’s administration once again in turmoil, the failed governor is bringing back a familiar strategy: claiming ignorance and refusing to comment. Eight months ago, Rauner claimed he hadn’t seen a controversial cartoon printed by his former Illinois Policy Institute allies. The ensuing fiasco led to Rauner’s second staff purge in as many months.
Now, Rauner’s office will not say if he has seen an explosive email written by a former top aide that suggested shifting blame for the Quincy Legionnaires’ outbreak onto combat veteran and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth. WGN TV’s Tahman Bradley asked Rauner’s Quincy point-person about the email resulting in the following dodge:

[Mike] “Hoffman also weighed in on a controversial email from a Rauner aide who wrote, ‘We can maybe tie [the Legionnaires’ outbreak] back to Sen. Tammy Duckworth.’
Duckworth, a veteran who lost her legs in the Iraq War, previously ran the agency that oversees the Quincy home under Gov. Rod Blagojevich and Gov. Pat Quinn.
‘My focus is on taking care of veterans today, tomorrow and for generations to come,’ Hoffman said. ‘I think wasting time on random comments taken out of context is not the best use of my time. So I’m going to focus on the future.’
Did Rauner see that email?
‘I don’t believe so,’ Hoffman said.”

“Bruce Rauner is once again trying to cower until his latest crisis passes to avoid giving Illinoisans any semblance of the answers they deserve,” said DGA Illinois Communications Director Sam Salustro. “Rauner should know he cannot just wish or blame away his administration’s mismanagement at the Quincy Veterans’ Home.”
