Every State, Every Vote Statement on the Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act

Latest News

Today is the 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act.

Every State, Every Vote Co-Chair Oregon Gov. Kate Brown released the following statement:

“The Voting Rights Act was signed into law 55 years ago today, but there is still so much work to be done. The Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act in 2013, leading to voter suppression in communities of color nationwide. We must take action to guarantee equal access to the ballot box for every American.

“Congress needs to restore the Voting Rights Act and pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. The federal government also needs to include at least $4 billion in election assistance to the states to ensure that our democracy remains strong during the COVID-19 pandemic. Voting rights shouldn’t be partisan – every American deserves to have their voice heard on Election Day.”
