DGA Statement on Louisiana Gubernatorial Win

Today, Montana Governor Steve Bullock, Chair of the Democratic Governors Association, released the following statement on John Bel Edwards’ win in Louisiana’s race for governor:

“Congratulations to Governor-elect John Bel Edwards on his victory tonight,” Bullock said. “Tonight’s win is a clear sign that voters trust John Bel Edwards’s character and his focus on supporting job creation, investing in schools, and passing a fiscally responsible budget.

“The Louisiana results today prove that strong Democratic gubernatorial candidates can win races anywhere in the country – in red, purple or blue states,” Bullock added. “On behalf of Democratic governors, I congratulate John Bel Edwards on his new role as governor.”

DGA Executive Director Elisabeth Pearson said the following about the strategy of the race:

“This is a major victory for Democratic governors around the nation. The DGA strategically invested in this race, helping Democrats stay up on the air for the runoff to ensure the race remained focused on the clear contrast between the character of the two candidates,” Pearson said. “The DGA invested key staff resources in Louisiana to bolster fundraising and field operations, and invested more than $2 million when it counted to define the race.

“John Bel Edwards is a strong leader who fights for what he believes in,” said Pearson. “When pundits said the race was ‘impossible’ and a ‘coronation,’ John Bel kept fighting every day. We congratulate John Bel Edwards on his upset victory tonight.”
