DGA Statement on John Bel Edwards' Primary Victory

Today, Democratic Governors Association Executive Director Elisabeth Pearson issued the following statement on John Bel Edwards advancing through the primary election in Louisiana’s race for governor:

“Congratulations to John Bel Edwards on his first place finish in the primary,” said Elisabeth Pearson, executive director of the Democratic Governors Association. “John Bel Edwards has proudly served our nation and the state of Louisiana with integrity. He served as an Army Ranger in the 82nd Airborne and enforced the honor code at West Point. In Louisiana, he has fought to ensure equal pay for women, to raise the minimum wage and to ensure that Louisiana veterans get the services and care they have earned. John Bel Edwards has the character and the experience to be Louisiana’s next governor.

“The primary results were a clear repudiation of David Vitter’s tired Washington politics. Louisiana voters know that they just can’t trust David Vitter. That’s why more than 70 percent of them rejected his campaign today.

“Senator Vitter has repeatedly betrayed the trust of Louisiana voters. His 16-year career in Washington has left a trail of broken promises on issues like restraining government spending and funding veterans health care, and he has brought the worst Washington-style campaign tactics home to Louisiana. No wonder voters showed today that they don’t trust David Vitter to be their governor.”
