CT House GOP Leader “Unimpressed with Current Gubernatorial Field”

Themis Klarides: “I’m still looking for that candidate” that can win the general election

Connecticut Republicans are sounding the alarm about their party’s recruiting efforts for the governor’s race this year.

In an interview with Hearst Connecticut Media, House GOP Leader Themis Klarides seemed very skeptical that anyone in the current field had the ability to win the general election:

Themis Klarides sounded unimpressed with the current gubernatorial field Tuesday, the strongest signal yet that Connecticut’s top Republican female office holder could soon jump into the crowded race herself.

I think it will take a certain kind of candidate to win a general election in Connecticut and I’m still looking for that candidate,” Klarides told Hearst Connecticut Media. “I think a lot of people are. I think that’s why it’s almost February and the field is so open.”

Several top recruits, including Senate GOP leader Len Fasano, have already decided against running for the nomination. Republicans have also questioned whether national groups like the RGA are really committed to the race at all. These recruiting failures sure don’t help.

“You know things are really bad when even Connecticut Republicans admit they have a recruiting problem,” said DGA Communications Director Jared Leopold. “The field is just a bunch of Trump wannabes and B-teamers. The GOP’s huge recruiting failure shows spells big trouble for them in November.”
