BREAKING: RGA Chair Scott Walker 1st Gov to Explore Waiver for Pre-existing Conditions

Walker announces he’s open to waiver that would raise rates for Wisconsinites with preexisting conditions

The pre-existing condition waiver is emerging as a defining issue for governors races in 2018, and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker just became the first governor to open the door to a waiver.
Walker announced this morning that, if re-elected in 2018, he would consider waiving protections for Wisconsinites with pre-existing conditions.
The Associated Press in Wisconsin reported that: “Gov. Scott Walker says he would consider seeking a waiver under House Republicans’ health care changes to let insurers raise premiums for people with pre-existing conditions.”
Walker is the first governor in the country to show support for the waiver, which in the current version of the law, becomes available to governors in 2019. Some Republicans speculated it was so extreme that no governor would actually use it.
In Wisconsin alone, an estimated 852,000 people have a pre-existing condition.
“Governor Walker just confirmed Wisconsinites’ worst fear about this health care bill,” said DGA Communications Director Jared Leopold. “Now, Wisconsinites know that if they re-elect Governor Walker, they’ll face skyrocketing health care costs to pay for a massive handout to insurance companies. Every Republican gubernatorial candidate in America will have to answer whether they’d join the RGA Chair in supporting waivers to jack up rates on people with pre-existing conditions.”
