As GOP’s Sabotage Cause Millions to Lose Health Insurance, Democratic governors are Taking a Stand at the State Level
Across the country, Democratic governors are leading the way by expanding Medicaid and protecting access to care
A recent CDC survey reports that, following the GOP’s attacks on America’s health care system, over one million Americans lost health insurance in 2018. But on the state level, Democratic governors are reversing this alarming trend. From expanding Medicaid to enshrining Affordable Care Act protections into state law, Democratic governors are, once again, protecting their residents from the GOP’s cruel agenda.
“In 2018, voters rejected the GOP’s health care sabotage and voted in Democratic governors who would protect their right to affordable and accessible care,” said DGA Executive Director Noam Lee. “From Governor Mills in Maine to Governor Lujan Grisham in New Mexico, Democratic governors are taking a stand and making sure Americans’ access to health care is protected.”
See just some of the steps to protect access to health care Democratic governors have taken this year:
- In Maine, Gov. Janet Mills signed an executive order on her first day in office expanding Medicaid to an estimated 70,000 additional Mainers.
- In New Mexico, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed legislation enshrining the ACA’s Women’s Health Amendment in state law, requiring insurance policies to cover contraception without cost-sharing.
- In New Jersey, Gov. Phil Murphy signed a series of legislation aimed at protecting the health of new mothers and their infants.
- In Nevada, Gov. Steve Sisolak created the state’s first maternal mortality review board to combat maternal deaths in the state.
- In Montana, Gov. Steve Bullock signed a Medicaid expansion renewal allowing the expansion program to continue for another six years.
- In Rhode Island, Gov. Gina Raimondo signed an executive order that aims to curb rising health care costs in the state.
- In Colorado, Gov. Jared Polis created a task force to evaluate and develop plans to address behavior health issues in Colorado.
