DGA Names Former Rep. Steve Israel as Advisor to ‘Unrig the Map’

Former House leader to help advance DGA redistricting strategy

Today, the Democratic Governors Association (DGA) is announcing former U.S. Rep. Steve Israel as a new advisor to the committee’s redistricting program, Unrig the Map.

 As the former chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Israel will work to advance the DGA’s strategic effort to elect Democratic governors who can make a meaningful difference in the 2021 redistricting process.

 With Unrig the Map targeting races in 18 states during the next four years, the DGA’s move will help Democrats maximize opportunity in upcoming gubernatorial races.

 “Steve Israel has been a proven leader for Democrats and has seen the impact of GOP gerrymandering first hand,” said Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy, Chair of the DGA. “Governors’ races in the next four years will play a major role in determining the political landscape of the future, and we are thrilled to announce Rep. Israel’s involvement with Unrig the Map.”

 “Electing Democratic governors is a key step to winning back a lasting Democratic majority in Congress,” Rep. Israel said. “For too long, Republican approved electoral maps have stacked the deck against the American people. With Democratic governors in office, we can fight back against GOP gerrymandering and pave the way for Democrats to win back the House of Representatives.”

The DGA launched Unrig the Map in the summer of 2015 to help position Democratic candidates for success ahead of 2021. The strategy targets 18 states – highlighted on the map below – where Unrig the Map will work to:

  • Recruit candidates who can compete and win in states across the country;
  • Invest in ongoing campaigns and strategy;
  • Build on-the-ground infrastructure in state parties to ensure institutional support.
