Campaign in Crisis: McCrory Emerges from 72 Hours of Hiding After NCAA, ACC News

As state reels from HB2 fallout, McCrory was nowhere to be found 

This week, the NCAA and ACC announced they would be pulling multiple championship-sporting events out of North Carolina because of the state’s anti-LGBT House Bill 2 law. But where was Gov. Pat McCrory during the announcements?

Hiding out in Boston.

As the fallout over McCrory’s refusal to back down from HB2 grew to claim some of the state’s most important sporting events – including the first and second rounds of the 2017 Division I Men’s Basketball Championship and the ACC title football game slated for Charlotte in December – McCrory ran off to Boston to attend policy conferences with the Republican Governors Association. 

McCrory finally showed up in North Carolina this afternoon, but refused to answer questions from reporters.

“Pat McCrory has shown zero leadership while the NCAA and ACC announced their decisions to pull out of North Carolina,” said DGA Communications Director Jared Leopold. “Instead of addressing the economic crisis he caused this week, McCrory chose to disappear for three straight days. North Carolinians shouldn’t have to look on the back of a milk carton to find their governor during an economic emergency.”

When McCrory was finally reached for comment, national media was quick to call out his paltry response:

“Hours after the A.C.C. announced its move, Gov. Pat McCrory, who is seeking re-election this fall, used a statement to repeat, verbatim, 67 of the words he used Tuesday to comment about the N.C.A.A.’s decision,” reported the New York Times.
