Press Release: Democratic Governors support rescinding suspension of Davis-Bacon act
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Governors support President Bush’s decision to reverse his initial suspension of the Davis-Bacon Act in the Gulf region.
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the Bush administration hastily suspended provisions protecting the prevailing local wages of those working to rebuild the Gulf Coast. Democrats and Republicans alike joined Louisiana Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco’s call for the President to reinstate the Davis- Bacon Act.
“In times of national emergency, we cannot afford to sacrifice the rights of workers – the rights of Americans – to decent wages, so I commend the President for reversing his decision and allowing
workers to earn fair pay,‿ DGA Chair New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson said.
