In First Weeks, New Dem Govs Are Signing Executive Orders on Health Care, Education, and Affordable Housing

Now that the entire 2018 class of Democratic governors has been inaugurated, they are immediately making a difference by signing executive orders to increase access to health care, improve education, and close the wage gap.
Governors Janet Mills (ME) and Tony Evers (WI) immediately got to work fixing health care in their states by signing executive orders related to Medicaid. Within the first week of expanding Medicaid in Maine, 529 Mainers were approved, immediately giving them access to affordable health care.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom rolled out a bold housing development plan to increase the supply of affordable housing and fulfill his pledge to build 3.5 million new homes.
In Michigan, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an order to close the wage gap between male and female state employees.
And in New Mexico, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is changing the way school children are tested and how teachers are evaluated.
Here are some other highlights of Democratic governors setting out bold agendas from Day 1:
Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly reinstates protections for LGBT state workers in Kansas eliminated by Brownback
“As I have said numerous times before, discrimination of any kind has no place in Kansas and it will not be tolerated in this administration,” said Gov. Kelly. “We will ensure that state workers feel safe and supported in their working environment.”
Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak established a task force to combat and prevent sexual harassment
“Sexual harassment & discrimination have no place in NV. If we want to make this a reality, our state government & employees must lead the way,” said Gov. Sisolak.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is promoting inclusivity by establishing the One Minnesota Council on Diversity, Inclusion and Equity.
“Everybody’s voice matters,” Gov. Walz said Wednesday. “This is our opportunity to continue to build on this incredible state’s legacy to have those open conversations on inclusion and equity, making sure that everyone is here before decisions are made.”
