Schweitzer, Daschle Congratulate Richardson on Cabinet Designation, Welcome Denish to DGA
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Governors Association (DGA) Chair Gov. Brian Schweitzer and Executive Director Nathan Daschle today congratulated former DGA Chair Gov. Bill Richardson (N.M.) on being designated the next United States Secretary of Commerce. They also welcomed Lt. Gov. Diane Denish (N.M.) to the DGA.
“Bill Richardson has been one of the nation’s most effective public servants for many years, and he will be an invaluable member of President-elect Obama’s administration especially during these tough economic times,” Gov. Schweitzer said. “As a former DGA Chair and a Governor who puts people over politics, Bill is an exemplary leader my fellow Governors and I look up to and admire.”
“I want to extend a warm welcome to Diane Denish,” Gov. Schweitzer continued. “Diane has worked to improve education across New Mexico, strengthen the state’s economy, crack down on crime, and expand access to affordable health care. The Democratic Governors look forward to working with her as she continues to move New Mexico in the right direction.” Lt. Gov. Denish will be New Mexico’s first female Governor.
Daschle said, “Over the past several months, Governor Richardson and the nation’s Democratic Governors came together in historic ways to promote President-elect Obama’s positive vision for change. As an integral part of the incoming administration, Governor Richardson will be in a position to work directly on delivering that change to the American people.”
“Governor Richardson has been as committed to the DGA as he has been to improving the quality of life for the citizens of New Mexico and the nation. Diane Denish will be a bold Governor and an outstanding addition to the DGA,” Daschle said.
Gov. Richardson served as DGA Chair for an unprecedented two terms in 2005 and 2006 when the DGA began the winning streak that continues to this day. Democrats won the two gubernatorial races in 2005 and 20 of the 36 races in 2006, regaining the majority of governorships for the first time since 1994.
Gov. Schweitzer said, “We’re going to miss counting Governor Richardson among our ranks, but we know that he will continue to work very closely with us. Bill will be a tireless advocate for hardworking Americans and a powerful agent for economic growth as the next Secretary of Commerce.”
