Manchin Announces Schweitzer, O'Malley as New DGA Chair, Vice Chair

Washington, D.C. – Following yesterday’s meeting with President-elect Barack Obama, Democratic Governors Association (DGA) 2008 Chair Gov. Joe Manchin (W.Va.) announced that Gov. Brian Schweitzer (Mont.) was elected DGA Chair at the DGA’s annual winter meeting. Gov. Martin O’Malley (Md.) was elected Vice Chair.

“The DGA has never been in a stronger position, and Brian Schweitzer is a dynamic leader who will take the organization to the next level,” Gov. Manchin said. “Brian has made in-roads in traditionally conservative-leaning areas because he’s honest, practical, and knows how to get results.”

In the meeting with President-elect Obama, the Governors pledged to work with the Administration to strengthen our economy and create new jobs. Gov. Schweitzer announced that his top policy goals as DGA Chair are to offer the federal government economic solutions that have been successful at the state level and to help restore the state-federal partnership.

“To get the economy moving in the right direction, the states and the federal government must have a better relationship than we had under the Bush Administration,” Gov. Schweitzer said. “President-elect Obama and the Governors are ready to work together in order to deliver the change Americans are so clearly demanding.”

Gov. O’Malley said, “I’m honored to have been elected the DGA’s Vice Chair especially during this time of unprecedented challenge and opportunity for our nation and our states. I look forward to standing with my fellow Governors as we work closely with our federal partners to get our economy moving again for America’s families.”

“Joe Manchin has taken the DGA to historic heights, and Martin O’Malley and I have the sturdiest of foundations to build upon,” Gov. Schweitzer said. “The DGA has the greatest number of Democratic Governors since 1994, and we have an incoming President who looks at us as partners rather than adversaries. I cannot think of a more exciting time to be leading the DGA.”
