O'Malley Launches Children's Dental Project
Gov. Martin O’Malley announced that work is underway to acquire a mobile van that will provide dental services to children in Prince George’s County and surrounding areas. This service, known as the Deamonte Driver Dental Project, is named after a 12-year-old Prince George’s County youth who died from a dental infection in 2007. “Together, we have resolved to do everything within our power to prevent avoidable tragedies like the loss of Deamonte Driver, who passed away when an untreated toothache spread to his brain,” said Gov. O’Malley. “Through this project, we’ll be able to reach out to kids just like Deamonte, ensuring that they will not be turned away from routine but potentially life-saving care.” Read more
AR – Beebe Supports Funding for Higher Education. A $500,000 distribution comes to Arkansas State University Mountain Home from the Governor’s General Improvement Fund because of a demonstrated local commitment to higher education, Gov. Mike Beebe said. Read more
CO – Ritter: Asian Trade Mission Going Well. Gov. Bill Ritter says his Asian trade mission is going well and state officials have made significant progress urging the Japanese to increase imports, including beef. He’s also pushing for a nonstop airline route between Denver and Tokyo, promoting the state as a prime tourist destination. In a conference call from Tokyo, the governor says he talked to Japanese officials about renewable energy technology. The governor has made his new energy economy a keystone of his administration, forming a coalition that includes government facilities, industry and education research centers. Read more
DE – Markell Off to a Bipartisan Start. Gov.-elect Jack Markell has named a Republican to serve as his chief of staff. Markell says Dennis Rochford will assist him with the daily operation of the state and help develop a legislative agenda. Markell says Rochford offers the right combination of government and business experience. By choosing a Republican, Markell says he is looking to put together the very best team. Read more
IA- Culver Announces Funds for Mental Health Services. Gov. Chet Culver says that Iowa will receive more than $4 million federal funds to extend counseling and mental health services for disaster victims. Culver announced the funding at the Abbe Center for Community Mental Health. The governor says it’s important to support the victims of the summer’s floods and storms and says that the effects of the floods and storms are not always visible. Read more
NJ – New Poll Shows Corzine with Strong Lead. Gov. Jon Corzine leads Republican Chris Christie in the 2009 race for New Jersey governor. The Quinnipiac University Poll has the Democratic incumbent up by 42 percent to 36 percent over Christie, the U.S. attorney for New Jersey. Read more
TN – Bredesen Opens Budget Hearing to Students. Bradley County Schools was one of four school districts invited to participate in Gov. Phil Bredesen’s Department of Education Budget Hearing. As students watched the budget meeting, they wrote down questions which were then e-mailed to Gov. Bredesen. Read more
