Granholm to Revitalize Downtowns

Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm signed a package of bills that is expected to give local officials new tools to help attract business to revitalize downtowns. “Vibrant downtowns, both large and small, are vital to a prosperous future for Michigan,” Granholm said. Creating opportunities for new entrepreneurs, she added will allow downtowns to attract young professionals and revitalize retail and housing development. Read more

VT – Symington to Participate in First Gubernatorial Debate. Vermont’s three major gubernatorial candidates will be squaring off in their first formal debate of the 2008 election to discuss some of the most important issues for Vermonters, including the environment, energy, food and farming. KY – Beshear Kicks Off Town Hall Meeting Series. Gov. Steve Beshear kicked off his “Beshear About Kentucky” town hall meeting series. Three topics came up – education, the drug problem, and eastern Kentucky roads. Beshear promised to take their ideas to Frankfort. The governor brought his ideas of using coal to create energy and jobs and more adventure tourism to boost the local economy. “When we listen, we learn, and then we can take that information and make Kentucky a better place to call home for everybody,” Beshear said. MD – O’Malley: Need for Family Farms, Better Land Management. Gov. Martin O’Malley and Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown met with farmers at Bowles Farm in Clements. During the visit, O’Malley spoke with a large gathering of farmers and concerned citizens about the need for family farms, preserving Maryland’s green footprint and better land management practices. “This administration has as its theme, increasing the sustainability of the middle class, small business, and family farms,” said O’Malley. MT – Schweitzer Attends Launch of Wind Energy Project. A ceremony attended by Gov. Brian Schweitzer marked the start of work on a wind energy project. The first phase of the project calls for 71 turbines producing 106.5 megawatts of electricity. Read more

NH – Lynch Increases Access to Affordable Housing. A 12-year legislative campaign to break down barriers to build affordable housing became a reality. Gov. John Lynch said finding housing working families can afford remains a serious challenge, and he celebrated a ceremonial final step for three related measures. “Every family in New Hampshire deserves a safe and healthy home. Homeownership not only fosters pride, it helps build communities, a stronger work force and a stronger economy,” Lynch said. Read more

NM – Richardson Proposes Tax Rebates, Credits. Gov. Bill Richardson will ask lawmakers to approve a wide-ranging assistance package during a special session that could be held as soon as next month. The proposed package includes income tax rebates, tax-free shopping for the winter holidays, increased tax credits for working families, and help with child care and energy costs. The proposals would be paid for largely out of a $400 million budget surplus New Mexico will have this year. Read more
