AR – Beebe Unveils Long-Term Care Partnership. Gov. Mike Beebe announced the Arkansas Long-Term Care Partnership, which brings together private insurance and Medicaid to protect the assets of middle-income individuals as they enter their senior years or face long-term-care decisions. Individuals who purchase Long-Term Care Partnership policies will be able to protect their assets, including savings, family-owned businesses, or farms, for as much as the amount of the purchased policy while still being able to apply for Medicaid. “I promised, that as Governor, I would address the complicated long-term-care issues our aging population faces. A new remedy to help Arkansans preserve what they’ve earned will become reality July 1,” Beebe said. Read more

MT – Schweitzer Helps Teachers Pay Off Student Loans. Gov. Brian Schweitzer announced that 100 of Montana’s teachers will be receiving some help in paying back their student loans. The program is aimed to keep Montana educators in Montana classrooms. “The question is: ‘how can we get young Montana teachers to stay in Montana when they have $20,000, $30,000 and beyond loans to pay off?’ We become more competitive when we help them pay off their loans and that’s what this program is all about” says Schweitzer. OR – Kulongoski Awards Freight Grant. A nearly $6 million freight ramp and cargo storage project received a $4.7 million boost from the state when Gov. Ted Kulongoski awarded the Medford airport a ConnectOregon II grant. Kulongoski said moving freight was critical to increasing activity in the so-called traded sector, where goods are produced here and sold outside the area. “Investing in our transportation system is essential to our economic vitality,” said the Gov. who was flanked by transportation and government officials on a new cargo apron constructed with ConnectOregon I funds. WA – Gregoire Increases Funds to Food Banks, Expands Food Stamp Eligibility. Gov. Christine Gregoire announced that she is immediately allocating $200,000 from her emergency fund to help food banks around the state pay for gasoline. Food banks are also being stretched by higher demand. In an effort to reach consumers, Gregoire announced the state will alter qualifications for food stamps, starting in October, that will allow more people to qualify. Gregoire said she estimated the program will serve an additional 23,000 people. Read more

WV – Editorial: Manchin’s Food, Gas Tax Cuts Offer Citizens Hope. With rising gas and food prices creating an undue hardship upon thousands of families across the region, Gov. Joe Manchin provided a glimmer of hope to those who are struggling to make ends meet. Manchin joined several state officials in Charleston Thursday morning to announce the final phase down of the West Virginia food tax at a Kanawha City grocery store. Lawmakers in Charleston approved Manchin’s proposed freeze on the gasoline tax. The governor emphasized that “every penny helps” in trying to assist motorists faced with record-shattering prices at the pump. Read more
