Gregoire Raises Twice Opponent's Money
Washington State – With the 2008 legislative session freeze on fundraising behind her, Gov. Chris Gregoire has shifted her campaign into high gear, raising twice as much money as GOP challenger Dino Rossi in April, according to figures provided by the respective campaigns. The Democratic governor raised about $1.3 million in April. The Republican’s campaign raised about $625,000 during the same period.

WV – Poll Shows Manchin with Formidable Lead. A new poll released by TSG Consulting shows Gov. Joe Manchin with a strong lead over his primary opponent. According to the poll, 63 percent of West Virginia voters prefer Manchin, while only 20 percent support his opponent.

CO – Culver Welcomes Wind-Turbine Expansion. Vestas Wind Systems, the world’s largest wind-turbine manufacturer, says it plans to build a $250 million factory for wind turbine towers somewhere in the state next year, greatly expanding its presence in Colorado. Vestas’ current Windsor plant expects to employ 650 to 700 people when the factory is in full production. The new tower factory is expected to employ 400 people by the end of 2010. Gov. Bill Ritter, who attended Vestas’ grand opening in March, welcomed the news that Vestas plans to increase its Colorado presence. “This is another great victory for the new energy economy and all of Colorado,” Ritter said.

MA – Patrick Pleased with Expanding Energy Industry. A renewable energy company said yesterday it is establishing its American headquarters in Marlborough, a move expected to create at least 100 new jobs over the next 18 months. “I am very pleased that Brookfield Renewable Power has chosen Massachusetts for its U.S. headquarters,” Gov. Deval Patrick said. “Brookfield has renewable energy facilities all over North and South America, and I am glad to see them creating a home base for their U.S. operation in the clean energy industry we are growing here in Massachusetts.”

NJ – Corzine Seeks Offshore Wind Farm. Gov. Jon Corzine wants his state to be the first in the U.S. Northeast to build an electricity-generating wind farm off the Atlantic coast. Five companies are vying for $19 million in grants and the right to put as many as 200 windmills within 20 miles of the Jersey Shore. Offshore wind would help Corzine fulfill a plan for how the state should receive and use its energy. “There’s a clear need to produce as much carbon-free energy as possible. If we’re successful, this is going to be replicated elsewhere,” Corzine said.

NM – Richardson Strengthens Ties with Mexican State. Gov. Bill Richardson signed two agreements with Gov. Eduardo Bours Castelo of the Mexican state of Sonora. The memoranda of understanding focus on strengthening economic, tourism and security ties between the two states, including establishing direct flights between Albuquerque and Sonora.

NY – Paterson Urges Federal Foreclosure Action. Gov. David Paterson made a plea to federal lawmakers, saying in a legislative breakfast that New York’s congressional delegation should blaze a trail towards correcting the foreclosure crisis. “As the data clearly shows, this is a situation where we need to take immediate action,” Paterson said. “It was a lack of action that helped get us here, and more inaction is inexcusable.” Paterson asserted that the toughest times in the housing market were likely ahead, a fact that’s been corroborated by upwardly trending numbers in the category of first-time foreclosures, and by the number of people in the state who have yet to be helped by outreach programs designed to assist homeowners adjust their mortgages.

NC – Easley Bids to Improve Working Conditions. Gov. Mike Easley is to put forward $1 million to increase inspections of poultry plants and assure proper working conditions. The move is part of his 2008-09 budget proposal, which will recommend spending an additional $31 million to help those who often are overlooked by society but are the most in need. The budget also includes $714,000 to help prevent exposure to agricultural pesticides including increased education efforts for farm workers, additional trainers, increased field inspections and compliance monitoring and illness and injury reporting. “One of the most important roles of government is to look after and protect the basic human rights of those who cannot stand up for themselves,” Gov Easley said.

VA – Kaine Announces New Jobs. Gov. Tim Kaine says a total of 85 jobs are headed to Page and Greensville counties with the expansion of two companies in those areas. Kaine says Shenandoah Waste Services will invest $4 million to expand its materials recycling operation in Page County, creating 60 jobs. The company’s recycled materials are used as an alternative fuel source for energy production. The governor also announced that Oran Safety Glass plans to invest $2.65 million to expand manufacturing capacity in Greensville County, creating 25 jobs.
