Dems Uniting behind Long Thompson

Indiana – Jill Long Thompson said Wednesday that state Democrats would unite behind her in their quest to defeat Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels in November following her narrow victory in Tuesday’s primary. “I’m very pleased to have received a number of phone calls already this morning from party leaders and they are very enthusiastic about working with me. Some of them endorsed my opponent. Some of them remained neutral,” Long Thompson told reporters in Fort Wayne. “But we are very unified.”

NC – Easley Endorses Perdue for Governor. Gov. Mike Easley says Lt. Gov. Bev Perdue will be a great governor because she understands the importance of education to North Carolina’s economy. Easley says Perdue is used to getting things done in state government. He referenced Perdue’s time as a state legislator, her efforts to increase salaries for teachers and her support of the state’s Smart Start pre-kindergarten program.

AR – Beebe Honors Companies That Provide Work-Life Balance. Gov. Mike Beebe honored Arkansas businesses that provide resources and support to employees seeking to balance the needs of work and family. “With increased strains on many families, companies that help employees balance work and life issues are increasingly valuable,” Beebe said. “I hope these winners will become role models for other business leaders who want to create programs that lead to happy employees and higher productivity.”

AS – Tulafono Creates Tourism Office. The pacific Island of American Samoa will initiate a Visitors Bureau, in hopes of tapping the tourist market that has proven so successful for other islands in the South Pacific. Gov. Togiola Tulafono has signed a new piece of legislation that establishes the creation of the American Samoa Visitors Bureau, an agency created for the purpose of promoting the country as a tourist destination to the rest of the world. Tulafono said, “Tourism is a multimillion dollar industry that the territory can certainly take advantage of. With the proper mechanism in place, we can realize our full potential in a relatively short span of time.”

IA – Culver Wants Dropout Rates Reduced. Iowa must take more steps to reduce the number of high school dropouts, specifically among minority students, Gov. Chet Culver said. “We have to deal with it head-on,” he said. “The fact is the dropout rate for minority students in Iowa is nearly 30 percent, and that is a challenge that we all have to try to figure out how to deal with and solve.” Part of the work will be to examine what other schools and states have done that has helped reduce minority dropouts.

NH – Local Companies Benefit From Lynch’s Grant Program. HiRel Systems will share some of the $72,330 in job training grants going to eight companies across the state to train workers. The latest grants will train about 340 workers, bringing the number of people trained through the reinstated program to 1,000. The program, a priority of the Lynch administration, is to keep jobs in New Hampshire by enabling companies to train and retain workers and compete globally. “By partnering with New Hampshire companies, we are helping workers get the skills they need for good jobs and helping our companies get the skilled workforce they need to stay and grow in New Hampshire,” Gov. John Lynch said.

NM – Richardson: Border Security Improving. Gov. Bill Richardson says he has seen an improvement on security along the U.S.-Mexico border. Richardson says he will ask U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza to reevaluate a travel alert issued in April that warned U.S. citizens of rising violence in northern Mexico. Richardson spoke in the Mexican border state of Chihuahua, across from New Mexico, where he met with Chihuahua Gov. Jesus Reyes. Richardson says there are still problems along the border but that increased policing by state and federal authorities has improved security.

WV – Manchin Welcomes New Jobs. Allevard/Sogefi announced it will construct a new plant to manufacture automotive filters, adding 65 jobs to the area by 2010. The new plant represents a $7 million investment by the Italy-based company that already operates the Allevard Springs plant, which employs about 90 people and produces stabilization bars used in vehicles. The president of the company thanked Gov. Joe Manchin for taking the time to build a relationship with Sogefi.
