Bredesen Encourages Energy Solutions

Tennesse – With Tennesseans using more electricity per capita than any other state, Gov. Phil Bredesen hopes an advisory panel can find solutions to curbing the state’s energy appetite. The governor’s task force on energy policy met for the first time Monday in Nashville. Bredesen said state buildings and the state’s fleet of 5,000 vehicles are good places to begin looking for energy savings and renewable energy opportunities.

WA – Gregoire Meets with Latino Leaders. Gov. Chris Gregoire met with Yakima Valley Latino leaders Tuesday during a campaign tour for re-election. During an almost two-hour morning meeting, Gregoire met with, among others, the mayor of Sunnyside, a councilman from Toppenish, educators and members of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The governor touched on a range of topics, including education, health care, her last year trade visit to Mexico and immigration. And she talked about her work in helping minorities and women gain access to small business loans, as well as Yakima’s Downtown revitalization project.

CO – Ritter Reviews Economic Development Progress. Gov. Bill Ritter checked off several wins on his business scorecard before members of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday. “We were able to bat 1.000 on our business package,” Ritter said. That package, unveiled last fall, sought to provide tax relief for businesses and more funding for emerging industries such as bioscience and clean energy.

MD – O’Malley Pushes Housing Lifeline. With many homeowners facing foreclosure but not seeking help, state officials are launching an advertising campaign on buses and billboards and through print and radio spots to get their attention with the slogan: “Mortgage Late? Don’t Wait!” “Help may well be available, but you have to pick up the phone and ask,” Gov. Martin O’Malley said. “About 50 percent of people who go through foreclosure never pick up the phone to call and ask for help. Oftentimes they are too ashamed. Oftentimes they simply abandon the home.”

NY – Paterson Re-Launches Tourism Campaign. The “I Love New York” campaign was re-launched at the Empire State Development luncheon today. The corporation says it is putting an emphasis on getting people to go beyond New York City. Governor David Paterson hopes the re-launch will help bring even more people to a state already visited by millions. “We are particularly happy that we’re going to try to increase the number of people who visit New York from 155 million to 200 million,” said the governor. “So it’s a little bit of a lofty goal, but New Yorkers have always had lofty goals, and New Yorkers have always achieved them and we think we will with this campaign.”
