Culver Promotes Wind Energy
Iowa – Iowa Lakes Community College played host to the first ever annual meeting and conference for the Iowa Wind Energy Association. The meeting works to bring together a host of wind energy experts to promote the value of increased use of wind energy in the State of Iowa. Gov. Culver says from increasing electricity from renewable sources to bringing thousands of new jobs to the state over the next few years, this type of technology is a great benefit to the state. Currently Iowa is producing 1,000 megawatts of electricity from about 1,000 wind mills in operation. “We’re talking about thousands of new jobs. We’re talking about capital investments of hundreds of millions of dollars,” Culver said.

IL – Blagojevich Proposes Mortgage-Crisis Aid. Gov. Rod Blagojevich pushed legislation to give homeowners behind on their payments a grace period of up to 60 days before lenders can foreclose. The measure would require lenders to notify homeowners who are a month behind on payments that they have 30 days to enter mortgage counseling and get back on track. Once counseling began, the homeowner would have another 30 days to refinance or set a new payment plan. The governor also announced that four new lenders have agreed to provide an additional $110 million in loan refinancing for struggling homeowners.

KY – Beshear: Japan Has Vital Impact on State Economy. Gov. Steve Beshear spoke to corporations from across the Commonwealth at a luncheon hosted by the Japan/America Society of Kentucky and the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development. The governor emphasized the growth of Japanese firms in Kentucky from the 1980’s to today. Starting with just a handful of companies like Hitachi and Toyota in the mid-eighties, Kentucky is now home to 153 Japanese companies employing more than 39,500. “Today, more Kentuckians work for a Japanese company than for German, British, Chinese, Canadian and all other foreign companies combined,” said Beshear.

NH – Lynch Awards Job-Training Grants. More than $100,000 in job-training grants has been awarded to eight companies around New Hampshire, Gov. John Lynch announced. The companies will receive $105,114 in grants, which the companies will match with $132,828 of their own money. The grants will let 338 workers receive job training. “Job training grants play a valuable role in helping New Hampshire workers and companies succeed. They provide our businesses with the skilled workers needed to compete in this changing global economy,” Lynch said. “I have visited a number of companies who have already received grants, I look forward to seeing more New Hampshire businesses using this important tool designed to help strengthen our economy.”

WA – Gregoire OKs Major Flood Control Investment. Gov. Chris Gregoire signed legislation Thursday giving $50 million for flood-control projects, drawing applause with her pledge to keep working on a basin-wide solution to Chehalis River flooding. Gregoire’s signing in a high school gym filled with students, political leaders and others was the first step in a six-year project to prevent destructive floods after December’s disaster. “We cannot simply push floodwaters from Centralia to Montesano,” Gregoire said. “We must address the issue from the headwaters to the mouth of the river.”
