Election Night Brings Blue Tide of Governors. Democrats have won a majority of governorships for the first time since 1994. Governorships switched parties in 6 states – New York, Ohio, Massachusetts, Colorado, Arkansas and Maryland. “Last night, America took a step toward getting our country on the right track by electing a majority of Democratic governors,” said DGA Chair New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, “Voters have welcomed in a blue tide. Democratic governors showed strength across the country, winning in every region. These widespread victories set the groundwork and establish tremendous momentum for Democratic victories in 2007 and 2008.” Read more
Govs’ Victories Position Dems Well for 2008. Jubilant Democrats saw their victories in Tuesday’s gubernatorial elections as a pathway to the presidency in 2008. “It’s extremely significant, the winning of these governors’ races, for winning in ‘08, for congressional redistricting, for shifting the power of policy from the federal government to the states,” said New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson. “It shows that Democratic governors are viewed as budget-balancers and problem-solvers. This is why so many of them have been elected in red states. Voters recognize that.” The Democrats reversed GOP dominance that reached back to 1994, seizing a 28-22 edge in governors’ mansions and stretching into several states that had been in Republican hands for eight years or longer, many of them rich with swing voters – Ohio, Colorado and Arkansas among them.
